This might be a great idea since it's always a shame to see old regions' deserts getting decimated for their sand (desert2 will always be in our hearts). However, the problem regeneration and newer world generation cause is the transition between old and new world-gen, it creates square ugly steep cliffs.
Ideally, the mojang team would have resolved this before it became a problem by simply making it so chunks that transition between world-gen form some sort of river with its surroundings smoothed like a valley. But hey, to them adding parrots is more is far more important, haha.
