I have to note that you don't get jailed for "Opening chests" i do that all the time. The only reason they would've banned you
Is that you may have accidently taken from it. Please don't lie.

I can second what Hawk said, I tend to check chests out of curiosity.

The only way you could get jailed is if you had taken from the chest you opened.
