A question for the Zesties...

A question for the Zesties...

Postby Zedwick » Fri Jan 31, 2020 12:26 pm

This is in no way an announcement for my future plans; I would just like to see if there is interest.

Would you like to turn ZestyLand into a snapshot test server for upcoming Minecraft versions?

I know some of you do check out the snapshots on your own, but wouldn't it be cool to be able to check things out together prior to the release? :D

Some things to consider:

  • Snapshots are unstable. You may not be able to login at times due to bugs, the world may be corrupted between versions.
  • You will almost definitely not be able to cross-server message nor access the lobby
  • Would you want to be able to access creative mode?
  • Should the world be regularly reset to allow for new content to be added close to spawn, and avoid the corrupt worlds issues?

Please let me know what you think of this idea, and the best way to set it up (regular world reset every new version? Let people access creative mode or survival as they wish? etc.)

I think it would be best to avoid creative mode.

Not only because I think it would negatively impact the survival aspect of Zestyland, but also because I think we should steer well clear of "pay to get creative mode".

I think if we did have access to creative mode, it would have to be vetted more than just on whether someone is willing to pay or not, which is a can of worms that someone braver than me would have to touch.

I don't have much of an opinion on snapshots vs stable versions, but I do think that resetting is part of what Zestyland is. We have Zurvival and Lvs for long term worlds, where as Zestyland has sort of stapled itself (at least in my eyes) as a place for trying out the new updates and messing around where you usually wouldn't - without much risk of losing anything important.

Those are just my thoughts on the matter, but I am glad Zestyland is making it's own path rather than just being another Zz/Lvs for Zestys. I look forward to where it goes, as seeing it as a scattered grid of blocks one day, and a cage of bamboo the next is what I think defines it.

I like using Zestyland for trying out new update features, and if it could be used to try out new snapshot features as well, I would really like that.

I realise that snapshots are not always stable, and it would have to be understood that if something bad were to happen that you would lose your things. That being said, I would'nt like a world reset until it is a new update (example, keep same world for 1.16 snapshots and 1.16 full release itself. New world would begin upon 1.17 snapshots) That way we can test new features out and have them ready to use/demonstrate if we want to show another player.

I would also be against access to creative mode. I would prefer it to be a survival experience, and for us to test these new features as if we were going to start using them on the main Zedwork servers. Depending on the features, it may mean some items are going to be difficult to get, but surely that will mean it would be equally as hard as on LVS/Zz.

I suggested access to creative mode as the Spigot community test server allows players to choose between creative and survival. They have a pretty simple rule that creative players should not mess with, nor spawn in items for those who choose to play in survival. It's a personal choice, and I like to think the Zesties could be trusted to respect the choice other players make for themselves.

I had thought we would reset the world for the release of 1.16, even if we'd been testing the 1.16 snapshots. And at that point, we can remove the option to use creative mode, so all Zesties are playing survival mode together in a fresh world for 1.16's release. I can see how having ready-built farms and structures to showcase at the time of release to reference together would be good, though.
