Offer of help

Offer of help

Postby LousyMiner » Mon Dec 14, 2020 8:12 pm

I saw that the wiki is a tad behind and, as it's a wiki, it's pretty much everyone's but nobody's responsibility to keep it up to date. Is there a team or a head?

Documentation is pretty much my day job, so I like to think that I'm pretty good at it. However, I doubt that much actually needs writing. More that it needs scraping from here and wikifying?

If this offer is welcome, those whose decision it is know how to get ahold of me. Oh, and don't worry about eager, fickle youth. I don't qualify on any one of those counts. I've seen T'Pau play live. Look 'em up, and you'll know how old I am!

Keep in touch and out of trouble.

Usually it is Mell (Mellorian) that updates most the wiki pages but im sure he would be open to update a few pages or even potentially have help doing it.
I have seen quite a few pages are out of date...
But as I say I would think Mell is the one to ask about the wiki

Thank you very much for your interest in helping out with our Wiki!

We have no formal authority or structure to managing the Wiki currently, but if you look at the recent changes from the last 30 days you can see it is Spectatre, Mellorian and Memery who mostly manage the Wiki and keep it up to date. Though anyone can help out by updating any incorrect or missing information, if you'd like to make any more considerable changes I suggest discussing it with them first; I believe they often discuss larger changes with each other before publishing.

Thank you both for your responses. @Zedwick, I'm not yet worthy! I'll follow up with the suggested persons.

Keep in touch and out of trouble.

Similar to most wikis, if you see something that's out of date, feel free to update it. We all appreciate the effort, and I believe there's a couple of us that keep an eye on recent changes who can correct any mistakes if we spot them.

Most of our current efforts revolve around the Zedling Council/Zedkin pages, though we also try and keep ZestyGames up to date. I imagine there's a fair few places around the servers that are worthy of their own wiki pages, and the forums themselves do hold a lot of information about past events and such.

As Zed said, bigger, more sweeping changes are probably worth discussing either with myself, Spec or Mem, or at the meetings that happen each week on the servers. Some pages, such as the Zedling Council/Zedkin's pages, tend to require us to put any changes past the respective councils to vote on, as we saw this last Saturday with the clean up of the regulations.

Hi @Mellorian

I had in mind to update some of the pages used more by new users, using myself as an example. I refuse to believe that I'm in any way unique or unusual! The one that stood out for me initially is the Regions section. The Region I'm building in has been named on the server but doesn't appear anywhere on the wiki.

Obviously, the wiki is public-facing. Therefore what information should be on any given page should be limited and safe. Are there guidelines for this? For the Regions, I had in mind a template page, because Regions are being named all the time, with the name of the Region, which ones are NESW of it, the biome mix perhaps. I'm totally open to other suggestions, and rejections.

We were actually discussing regions not too long ago!

It is important to filter the information we put up, since some people like to keep their regions private, but having a template for region pages sounds sensible, and there's definitely communal/public regions that would benefit from having pages, similar to warps on the Lvs side of things.

Okay, playing Devil's Advocate for no other reason than to better understand...

What makes it My/Your/Their region? I've /SetHome in Minecart region, but there's clear evidence of somebody having been there before me, probably two people with four separate incomplete builds within a few chunks of where I've set up base.

As such, I don't consider this to be My Region any more than the village I live in IRL is my village other than for personal identification and addressing purposes, certainly not ownership. I'm no landed gentry!

On that basis, should not all reasonably developed Regions be listed? I agree that not all named Regions should be listed because that would create a list that could grow faster than pages could be produced, and with little useful information.

Which then leads to RegionPosts existing within Claims; is this allowed, forbidden, undecided, unknown? It will happen, if it hasn't already, potentially causing problems for new users exploring and becoming trapped as they're Untrusted.

I realise that I'm digressing slightly but that's deliberate, to try to demonstrate that I'm thinking of the bigger picture here rather than blindly offering to churn out Wiki pages by the dozen, only for them to be worthless.

PS: I think I'll need my permissions on the Wiki extended before I can actually do what's eventually agreed upon.

A safe rule of thumb is that regions are owned by the person that named them, or that asked a Zesty to name it for them. This doesn't mean only named regions are owned, as you can /movein to a wilderness region, too, and some posts are named automatically by the server.

I'd say that who "owns" a region is based on their builds/presence in that region, though in the case of several people being near the same post, as you pointed out, I'd say that it is a shared post.

In terms of making pages for all regions, again I stand by that some people do not want their regions to be outed, to avoid players they have not invited visiting unwanted. I also feel we do not need every region documented on the wiki, I don't think that's our wiki's purpose. There are pages already for places like Zen and the current/past spawn regions, and I feel that for personal regions it should be up to the player who lives there to make/give permission for someone else to make a page for it.

I'm not the authority on all that though, and I think this is worth discussing further, but I do strongly feel that making an in-depth page on a region without the owner's (however that is defined) knowledge/permission would be a faux pas.

I think we're largely on the same page! My offer of help stands but I'll do nothing without prior discussion and agreement. If you want to spread the workload, feel free to invite me to whatever medium is used for discussion, if it isn't here.
