The Minecraft Update

Zedwick,

It looks like the new update will have a lot of great features. What are your plans for converting the server? Are you going to start with a new seed? Will we lose all of our stuff? Are you going to transfer the buildings? Will there be a temporary server? Will we get to keep all of the claim blocks we are acquired?

I have no plans to erase the world and start a new map. Everything should continue as usual, there will of course be a period after the update is released where the server will still be running 1.2.5, anyone wishing to continue playing on Zedwork will need to hold back on updating until bukkit releases a stable build, and all of our essential plugins are stable.

The world generation will change (especially due to the introduction of emeralds), which will need to be addressed; players will want to mine for emeralds, but they will only be available in newly generated chunks. There are a few options, still weighing them up to see which would be best. Though if anyone has any suggestions, please do share :)

I would suggest posting the options available so the players can find an informed consensus amongst themselves. It may be found that in general many people may not mind a full map reprisal, but I don't think many, myself included, know the full scope of the options available.

I certainly do not know all of the options. A total map erase would upset me personally, and I would imagine people like Chester would be quite upset as well. Anyone who has invested great amounts of effort or time.
From the sounds of the new chunk generation only containing "new content", it seems like we could just drop a new region post in a new chunk, put spawn there, and voila. Sure maybe I wont be able to use my mine in my town, but at least I wont have to rebuild everything, and re-farm everything.
Just some thoughts :)

Similar to zed's idea would be to maybe look for empty chunks farther out and put the 1.3.0 chunks there if that works that way. :P

There may no longer be a problem. The biggest feature of this is that, should emerald ore make it to the release, there wont be any in explored areas. However, emerald ore is not a mined ore, meaning it would be a waste of time to actively mine it. It will be used for currency only and as such is more easily obtained through interaction with the NPC's and other players. Should, and there is a SLIM chance, emerald ore be put into the package, it would not make since to actually change the world in order to accommodate it. We do have a plan in place to increase commerce areas, but we won't be making allowances for emerald ore.

Just a note, there is a less than 1% chance of finding it in any region and since it would only occur in specific regions its takes it farther down to a less than .01% chance of finding any.
