The Next Update

The Next Update

Postby GoldyBee » Fri May 31, 2013 1:15 pm

Ok! so I was looking into the next update and I have two concerns.

1. Name tags only spawn in dungeon chests, so with the new update, new chunks will need to be found. (i'm sure people want to name their horses and i'm not the only one)

2. I'm uncertain and have discussed this with giga but we have not come to a conclusion. I think horses will spawn on grass areas like normal mobs, he thinks new chunks will need to be found to find them. (thought that sounds kinda silly...)

Anyways, there have been many cases where people complain about the lack of unexplored land and the need of a map to find some, but i was thinking maybe zed or lady could fly across the ocean to a region post (unnamed) in a new area ((new continent?)) so that people can look for the name tags and then do the things there was no space to do previously.

Thoughts, opinions, post below~

I have been in favor of a new map for a while, it think when 1.6 arrives, that it would be the perfect time for the new map.

I wouldn't mind a new map as long as I could bring some of my belongings with me, there is just so many hours put into all the gear diamonds materials etc.
And maybe the possibility of the map download as well so I can continue to explore, or build there in single player.

if both of those ideas were met I wouldn't be totally against a map reset.

Yeah I don't think the ease of finding new items is worth erasing people's efforts, map history, and the like. People were mad about quartz, they simply didn't put in the time to go find some new areas. The same will likely be true of horses, armor, tags etc.
Want the reward, put in the effort. My thoughts :D

I have been thinking about this a lot recently as i have just started a new build and personally I dont think a map reset is needed. I think we have all worked too hard for what we have but i do think the lack of unexplored land is becoming a problem.. i am currently dismantling my castle and the grounds all of it, since a number of people, ignoring my signs at the region post, have moved in around me.. (i dont like people around me). And i have not been able to find another continent myself.. I have been more then 20k in both x and y but i have still not found land and i do not wish to cause lag by exploring further. I believe a new continent is needed perhaps for the 'older' well trusted players and the newbies discovering the server just starting out could perhaps stay on the old. This simulates a reset but we do not loose items or builds we have spent hours of our time creating.. I understand this could be seen as 'mean' but i dont want people building near me with tiny, square, cobble.. houses.. never to be seen again. leaving an eye soar from my castle balcony.. I have resorted to just living in the ocean like a recluse with no one but my squids for company. I understand this is a very controversial topic but i do think there should be some 'difference' between the regular committed lovers of zedwork and a troll trying out his grief ability or a newbie cutting down trees around my region.. If u disagree with me then thats ok this is only one minecrafters opinion :) Happy Mining :D

Just going to cover a couple of the points raised, I would like to see a few more opinions before I make any kind of decision over the others.

Map reset: I am, and probably forever will be, against a map reset. I enjoy giving you all space to create a world together, and would like to see it grow into something over time and have a true history to it. To be honest, I would not want to put time into running a server only to see everything vanish; I would most likely not find the motivation to continue if it all disappeared. As Dec said, moving on to new undisturbed land is a choice players can make to start over.

N00b5: New players coming on is definitely a good thing, but there is little space for everyone to build in their own region. It's just unrealistic to expect everyone to be able to have their very own region with no-one nearby. The /NewestRegion should give them space to build, and enough resources to start out. I think the major cause for problems with new players building near established players is most likely the /RandomRegion command. I may need to disable access to that command to ensure the new players mostly stick together, and have access to the resources of the area. Additionally, /RandomRegion can cause lag if used excessively. It may be generally beneficial to just be rid of it.

Just a note on the problem of new features from the update that require new land generation: As I have said, I enjoy the history of our world. It's nice to see where people began in building on Zedwork. It's also kind of nice to see the changes in land generation (though not too much has changed since Zedwork began). I have always seen new features as something to be earnt, even long in the past as I played on 1.3 (the first time around) and beyond, needing to head out into the world to find new land with the new generation. It's a whole new adventure to discover them. It gets arguably even easier on a server like Zedwork; you can ask others for help in where to look, or enter into trade to get the new blocks. I've not found Quartz myself, but I have Quartz from buying them from other players.

I've definitely been concerned about new land generation. My major concern, like just about everyone else, is the builds that I've put so much work into. Having started in October of last year, and beginning Mordor in December, I put all my time and effort into making it what it is today and it's the best thing I've made in minecraft to date. I feel that getting rid of all that hard work for a few nametags and horses (which can still be found by the dedicated bunch who are willing to travel for them) would be a pointless loss and I don't think I would play minecraft anymore if that happened. I am very dedicated to this server and would hate for something like that to happen.

With that said, I have been on servers with plugins that use portals to take you to other worlds that are comprised of entirely newly generated chunks, so maybe something like that could be implemented with the "1.6 portal" being in the cityregion, or something to that extent. At the very least, like Hylindar said, I would want a copy of the map to download so I could show people my creations after the fact, despite not wanting to finish the build I started.

Stark I think put a great cap on the idea,

just like in 1.3, and 1.5 people who want the new things have no problem finding them. Luck favors those who put in the time to make things happen. I went exploring the other day and found TONs and TONs of open land, not new chunks but open free building/gathering land. I wasn't trying to generate new chunks, saving that for 1.6 :D

Also: Zed I do think you should remove random region, or attach some other requirement to it. I crashed the server one day with Instigator on accident using it :( New players have no need for it, maybe u can make the newest region unable to accept the command? It's fun sometimes, but maybe not worth the headache.
