Region Naming

Region Naming

Postby Zedwick » Thu Jun 20, 2013 5:55 am

The intention for personalising regions with its own name was never about creating easy access to distant lands for mining, saving cool looking spots or as a save point for returning to in long exploration journeys. The idea was to give players who live in a region the chance to personalise it with a name, and allow others to visit it without needing to be invited.

We felt our kindness in naming regions has been seeing increasing abuse, and as such have decided to limit region naming by asking for a donation for some 'tokens' you can exchange for our favour in naming a region. Whilst our intention is for regions you actively live in to be named, this allows you to ask for any region to be named.

Existing laws governing region naming still apply. Naming a region does not mean you automatically own that region. If others live in the region, they must all agree to the new name. The region cannot already be named. We may deny a request to name a region as we see fit (likely for certain names) but you will still retain your token if that happens.

We currently have around 50 requests for regions to be named in our backlog, I will be going though them to approve any requests for regions to be named which are already settled by the person making the request. All future requests made will require a token on your account in order to be approved.

You may donate for tokens here: http://zedwork.co.uk/donate.php

Once you have tokens, you may request a region be made by entering the following the chat whilst standing by the region post, replacing <regionname> with the name you wish to call the region:

/Helpme Please name this region '<regionname>'

I like this idea, help the server and less randomly named regions implying people live there when they are vacant :D

I also think this is a great idea. I've seen people in chat tell new people they can just name a region willy-nilly and I've tried to say that it is meant for you to live there and just as a keepsake, but I'm often ignored or shot down by the majority of the chat. Not that it is needed, but I approve this! :D

It'd be really cool to see the "/randomregion" function have a better use from this. I want to use it and find cool looking regions and people's work that I can appreciate! not "mining3" in the middle of the ocean...

I am a little confused, does it need to be exactly those words? because maybe I am failing at it then.

I gotta agree with MistaShawnFrey here. like 80% of the regions that you visit with /randomregion is just pure ocean all around them, and very few actual regions that people live and build in. Im not sure if it's possible, but it would be great if there was some way to exclude specific regions from the /randomregion, or just make it prioritize newly named regions. In all the time i have used /randomregion, i have landed in a city where people live, like one time :/

I asked the original developer to make these changes to the /randomregion command, but he instead threatened to remove it (though never did it seems). The plugin is under new developers now, so I might make another request and see what they make of it. There are some players who would like to see it removed, though, as they value their privacy.

While i understand people's distaste for the ocean-based region posts, i rely on them for mining. If regions like mining3 or seed5 were removed a lot of ore and minerals would be left abandoned under the ocean. granted it may be annoying when visiting people, but surely it's better this way since some don't want their homes to be found so easily or without consent. (my first home, i told few people it's name so we'd be safe from random thieves) If you want to visit people, tell them in advance to get their region names. ^_^ surprises aren't always appreciated!

I enjoy surprising people by showing up next to them whilst they build/play. Of course this is not always met with warm hugs and I show myself out. Goldy and Giga are prolly my 2 prime candidates :P
