I don't really know, west may be your best chance for an unexplored continent close by the main continents - but I'm not sure how far has been explored there. There are some new continents found by some players far out, would probably be best finding those and heading out from there

I also disagree with a map update, but I like the "1.6 portal" idea. Or maybe another server? I honestly think the map will not be updated, but you can't "buy" a horse from someone. I will go along with whatever happens.

to buy a horse would be a bit tricky with the regions not always being near each other. I live on an island like many others, so for that to work you'd need to build a bridge just to get a horse across. (since a horse seems to buck you off in deep water and swim to shore itself... yeah, getting across an ocean ain't happening :b)
