[LVS] Building community animal farms and mob farms

Postby zharmad » Sun Nov 24, 2013 6:07 pm

Due to the poorer performance of vanilla servers, Zedwick has suggested that a community animal/mob farm be made available to keep the total number of loaded entities down (i.e. make it so that not every player will have 50 cows/50 chickens/etc.) This is for the 1.7.2 server.

Ideally speaking, there will be one near each hub or nether hub - at spawn, and at the jungle/savannah warp points. Suppose we build them, how would people like a community farm implemented? e.g. accessible with trading, by respected members, etc. The structure will be protected from griefing explicitly by disallowing block placement/removal.

How does this sound? We need your input.

From a server performance point of view, it would be best to have just 1 farm accessible from the nether hub. Each of the warps link directly back to spawn, giving them easy access to the nether hub. Having a farm at spawn, and at each warp, would be totally superfluous. Would prefer to keep the farm away from populated/trafficked areas (like spawn) so they are only loaded when a player goes to the farm expressely to use it.

I can only offer a way to prevent block breaking, not block placement. I can also offer a way to keep new players from visiting it (you may have seen the yellow names popping up, these are called 'Zedlings', they're kinda like members of the community. The title is earnt through playing in-game long enough on the server. I could restrict access to the area so only yellow named (or above) players could enter.
